"At the Donor Appreciation Luncheon, you meet some of the scholarship recipients—not just your own—and you realize what wonderful young people the College is attracting."
As an administrator with the State of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, Carolyn Byron '62 got to know a number of Gettysburg graduates living in her area. "They encouraged me to join the local alumni club," she says. "That led to serving in various offices and as president of the local club, and then on the College's Alumni Association Board."
Byron—who worked as a substitute teacher in a local public high school for most of her career—became interested in giving financially when she met Gabor Boritt, founder of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg. "The Institute fosters scholarships for high school students and teachers, so I decided to set up an endowment fund there," she says. This year, as part of Gettysburg's 50th reunion class, she created an annuity that will eventually go to the Civil War Institute, and she also set up a Gettysburg Fund Scholarship.
"Gettysburg opened doors for me through my education and through the alumni I met after graduating," says Byron. "I give back so that future generations will benefit."
